Section A: From Kohala View Estates, across Keanuiomanu Stream, to Waikoloa Stream
- Land owner: Parker Ranch
- Trailhead is located on the Kona side of the road, just makai of the Kamuela View Estates entrance. Plans have mentioned 6 parking spaces. This section runs south along the edge of the parcel boundary until it reaches Waikoloa stream.
- Land owner: Parker Ranch
- Runs along the south side of the stream, with a potentially 300' easement, up to the eastern boundary of the Transfer Station. There it will need to cross the stream and run on the north side into the large trailhead area.
Trailhead adjacent to the Transfer Station
- Land owner: State, easement given to WTG
- A 17 acre trailhead/picnic/parking area (that will be designed to accommodate horse trailers) to be located near the Waimea Transfer Station (for which an easement was obtained from the State in 2005).
- There is some discussion of the development of this area involving the power utility, potential new transmission lines, and the Lalamilo connector highway. It would be premature to make any concrete summary; for now, WTG clearly has the easement from the State.
- Land owner: Parker Ranch
- This section starts with the trailhead then will need to cross from the north to the south side of the stream, then proceeding east along the stream. Here the land is owned by Sandalwood estates on the north of the stream, and Parker Ranch south of the stream. Parker Ranch has agreed for WTG to put the trail on the Parker Ranch side, south of the stream. This section continues east to the base of Pu'u Opelu Road, at which there is a broad ford across the stream.
Section D: From top of Sandalwood Estates to the Ag Land boundary
- Land owner: Parker Ranch
- The trail will need to cross the ford to the north side of the stream, and run along the northern edge of the parcel until it reaches the eastern boundary of the State Ag Land.
- Land owner: State of Hawaii; The UH Board of Regents had the executive order which controls the land (66-1170 Opelo Road), but this is in flux.
- Currently the land is being used for an Agricultural Research Station (south of the stream) and the temporary location of a Hawaiian School (north of the stream). There is already a small bridge in the middle of parcel to cross the stream.
- Status: As of January 2006, the State of Hawaii has indicated their willingness to allow the County (and hence the Trail) an easement through the land. The County simply has to let the State know where we want our easement! Footpath construction by WTG volunteers leads from the Nature Park along the south edge of the stream, as far as the existing bridge.
- The official trail plan, which runs along the north side of the stream, is physically impossible unless we fill in the stream with concrete or cantilever to hover over the streambed.
Section F: from to the Nature Park eastern boundary to the Nature Park entrance.
- Land owner: State, leased to the WOC for the Nature Park
- This section follows an old road, barely paved, which dates from WWII when it was used by the Camp Tarawa training camp. Fortunately the path is clear and almost ready to be used as a greenway trail, just as it is now!
- The County Website says: "The first portion of the Waimea Trail and Greenways project, directly to the left and right just inside the entrance to the Waimea Nature Park, is now open to the public. Though this first open stretch is less than a mile, it now connects with a network of trails inside the Nature Park, and will eventually be ten or more miles in length." This is nice and positive, but actually, this section is only about 300 ft. long.
- Land owner: State, leased to the WOC for the Nature Park
- This section will be constructed in a straight line right on the southern edge of the Park land, next to a strip of grass along the edge of the CFH parking lot.
- Kaz confirms that the easement through the Park (sections F and G) is well established, although there is not really a drawing of it.
- along the streambed past Carter Professional Center
- Putting the trail very close to the stream is complicated, but a cooperative solution is being put together with the NRCS and the surrounding landowners, see August 2005 Update for details.
- Avi Okin is the WTG committee member heading up the NRCS/Carter/CFH/WOC solution.
- The Carter Center is owned and run by 'BP Partners', which is composed of Kenneth Brown and David Pietsch, based in Honolulu.
- Tim Poole is our contact at Carter. He is in Kenneth Brown's office in Honolulu.
- BP hired architects PKW Associantes (Phillip White and Assoc., Honolulu) to design both the original building and expanded parking lot. Our contact with them is with a guy named Rudie.
- Steve Woods is the person on the site in charge of construction; he was involved in laying out the parking lot.
- Runs along the Magoon parcel to the Catholic Church land
- Putting a trail along the Magoon land required a complicated land realignment between the County, the Catholic Church, and the Magoon parcel. When this deal was completed, the result was easier development for all parties, including a wider space for the trail.
- Bridge from County piece behind Magoon to the Church requires an 80 foot bridge to the north side of the stream.
- Land owner: Catholic Church
- Runs across the Church land to Lanakila Park, which is that little park on Lindsey Road, kitty-corner from Parker School.
Section K: from Lindsey Road, along north side of stream next to a small hotel (name?)
- Land owner: Tony Smart Trust? Contains a small hotel.
- Easement status: unknown?
- Land owner: Parker School Trust
- Follows the north bank of the stream through property owned by the Parker School Trust Corporation (behind the KTA Shopping Center).
- Parker School has development requirement to allow an easement for the trail - they are going through their rezoning process now.
