A similar trail system of 10 foot wide tread, built of concrete and asphalt on the island of Kauai.

Facts

  1. Ke Ala Kahawai O Waimea is a Hawaii County park.

  2. The paved trail will be 4.8 miles long and will follow the Waikoloa Stream from Church Row down to a future County Park across from South Kohala View Estates.

  3. By providing a nonmotorized transportation option, Waimea will reap the benefits of a safer route for children to get to and from school away from dangerous roadways, a healthier community, less reliance on gas, and an opportunity to experience and enjoy a beautiful, natural area of Waimea.

  4. If approved, Federal Highway transportation enhancement funds will be pursued to fund 80% of the cost. These funds can only be used for "alternative transportation." If these funds are not used in Waimea, they will be used on another island or go to another state. The 20% local match can be in dollars, land donations or volunteer time.

  5. Certain design criteria for safety and comfort are mandated when federal funds are used and enable all ages and abilities to enjoy the trail, including ADA accommodation. The completed trail is anticipated to be 10 feet wide to allow pedestrian, bicycle, wheelchair stroller and other users to pass in both directions and for people to walk side by side comfortably.

  6. Every effort will be made to minimize the number of trees impacted, working in collaboration with arborists and Waimea community members.

  7. Friends of the Waimea Trail and Greenway project are committed to collaborating with public safety and parks officials, nearby landowners and others to assure the safety of trail users and to protect the privacy, security and property of nearby residents, churches, farms and businesses.

  8. The trail is for day time use only.
